Spoon Mechanics

Daughter, an approach angle of 15
degrees is best for ice cream, shallower
for soups. When forced to use
the off hand, space the conversation
with long open questions, permitting
more hand-to-mouth time. Spoon
is the tool of choice for stolen morsels
of midnight comfort, between the computer
and different sleeplessnesses. There’s
no such thing as a salad spoon.
Accessorize warm beverages with
the spoonfuls you choose, but
never use your wet spoon in anyone
else’s sugar bowl. Lean forward when
trying not to slurp, for confidence.
Follow your prospective tastings
with hand or eye and cover drips
with napkins and sleight-of-plate.
Treat this utensil like all the tools that
both nourish and give away your
shortcomings of coordination:
When in doubt, dig in with your hands.
