In like a lion, out like an iamb – the transition into National Poetry Month is on. David will be taking his Introduction to Poetry workshop on the road to grammar schools in New Jersey, and debuting one or more new workshops, including “Poetry by the Numbers - poems in response to science” and “Poetry and Pictures – words about images”. See Appearances for all the details. Also, this is the time of hear when the Spoken Word Series does its planning, and you’ll be impressed with the variety of voices you’ll find next season in Hoboken, but we’re holding those details until June; Sign up for the DavidVincenti.com update to be the first to know!

We ended 2004 with the news that my poem “Comet” had been nominated for inclusion in the next Pushcart Prize anthology – that was quite a thrill. 2005 is off to a busy start, and I’ll direct you to Appearances for details. We’ve also significantly redesigned Writer’s Blog, mostly to save the folks at jmilligan.com the task of redesigning pages every time I think I have something to say. Hope you like all the changes! Drop me a line and let me know!

Happy Holidays! My family is preparing to celebrate Christmas, and since this website is part of the family, you’ll detect the scent of pine needles throughout. There are some holiday recommendations in the Reading Room, a Blog discussion of a classic story that everyone knows by no one really knows, and for you regulars: Yes, Virginia, there is a new Christmas poem. You can find it here. Much good news to come in January! See you then!

The Internet makes the world even smaller! OK, that’s not really news, but I do still find it remarkable when poetry and technology combine to make connections over long distances. Two fine poets, both residents of the other side of the country (and bloggers of a more diligent sort than yours truly), have seen fit to list my little effort here on their own sites. I’m indebted to Kelli Russell Agodon and Jeffrey Bahr not only for thinking highly enough of DavidVincenti.com to refer their readers here, but for the thoughts and dialogs they foster through their web presences. If you do nothing else today, go read Jeff’s Do The Math and Kelli’s Post-Valentine's Day with Waitress. If there’s time left in your coffee break, there’s a new blog entry and a dusted-off old poem waiting for you here.

October 31, 2004
Not much happening within these pages aside from some new blog entries; much, however, is happening with the Spoken Word Series: Elizabeth Lund on November 7, applications for next year’s artists are being received, and event planning for next year has begun, including the possibility of our first writing workshop! Visit the Contact page and get on the DavidVincenti.com mailing list right now if you’re within driving distance of Hoboken NJ and I’ll keep you posted on it all!

News? What isn’t news this month?  There’s way too much going on in NJ this month to call your attention to all of it. Check out the resources on the Links page; if you can’t find an event that interests you this month, turn in your AAP card and find a new hobby. On the personal, I’ll be filling Writer’s Blog with things I learned in two VERY full days at the Dodge this year, and I’m honored to be part of Edison Literary Review’s Issue 3 celebration (see Appearances for the details). Check back next week for more Dodge, DeBaun, and David miscellany!

There are echoes in the well! Use the Links page to find two poems in the current issue of Branches Quarterly. Visit Appearances for the correct time and date for the Edison Literary Review’s Issue 3 Celebration Reading; come to see if I can say “braless” without giggling. There’s a new blog and my first entry in the Reading Room. You’ll see we’ve taken down the “New Poems” section; I’ve learned (and I should have realized) that posting new work in this manner constitutes publication, which disqualifies a piece for many print publications. I’ll probably insert some excerpts from new work into the blog as I begin to update it more frequently, but I’m going to avoid posting unpublished works in their entirety for now. Sorry!

July 14, 2004
We’ve hung some new curtains and rearranged some of our more cluttered rooms here to present sort of a DavidVincenti.com v1.1 for your amusement and exploration. Summer is a traditional downtime in the poetry community, both in print and in person, but I’ve been busy preparing for September: the new Spoken Word Series schedule is posted at DeBaun.org, I’ve been writing an article for the next issue of my alumni magazine, the Stevens Indicator, all about the recent anniversary of The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun Auditorium. Finally, there are new words here in the Blog and under Selected Works.

June 14, 2004
Thanks to the cooperative spirit of some very generous and understanding artists, the Spoken Word Series 2004-2005 season is complete, and was announced last week at The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun Auditorium; check out www.debaun.org this week for a view of the list. I hope you were able to snag a peek at the first performance of “Turkey Talk”, an essay by Mavis Bauman that we performed as a radio play. Other new stuff: a new blog entry, early notice of an event on the far side of the desert of summer, and a promise to update the publications page and post some new work by the end of the month. And if you believe that one……

May 18, 2004
For someone who ordinarily barely tolerates Spring (I prefer it cold and I dislike ants in my house), I have to say this Spring has been excellent. I got to do a poetry workshop with the amazing students of Pioneer Academy of Science, the Spoken Word Series will shortly announce its complete 4th season, I was part of the extraordinary Celebration of NJ Literary Journals (click here for some photos of the event), my daughter is graduating kindergarten, and I finally had a respectable night of bowling (on the last night of the season, of course). Only the scroogiest of souls could complain with clear conscience today, but don’t worry. Come back in a few weeks… I’ll have found something to blow out of proportion by then.

I love this time of year. Baseball reemerges, college basketball reaches its summit, and National Poetry Month arrives! If you’re a Jerseydweller, there are many excellent events during NatPoMo; visit any of my NJ Poetry Resource links for more information. As for baseball and the NCAA, well, I’m a Met fan and I picked Kentucky to win it all. Oops. I’ve dusted off a very old “new” poem this month; something to celebrate the new season. And finally, you can take a look ahead to May’s Celebration of New Jersey Literary Journals (see Appearances); the participant list is complete. It’s going to be an incredible poetry relay race: thirty-three sprinters teaming up to complete a marathon. See you at the end!

A great event is in the works in my town: Poet Diane Lockward has organized a celebration of New Jersey Literary Journals on Sunday, May 16 at the West Caldwell Public Library. Ten journals and one book publisher will participate in a 3-hour reading, and Sander Zulauf has honored me with an invitation to be one of three artists representing the Journal of New Jersey Poets. This is going to be a great afternoon, and I'm honored to be a part of it. Email me if you'd like more information on this event as it develops.

David Vincenti, the Valentine's Day edition!
Not a lot of news this month, but a lot of good things coming: I've got some great opportunities coming over the next few months to participate in the education of some young people (ranging from 3rd grade to college sophomores), and I'm working out some poetry, some engineering, and some business things to share with them. In a nod to the day, there's a love poem and a related blog to be found in these pages. No Cupids, though. I promise.

Happy New Year! What a year this is already shaping up to be: There's a dune buggy on Mars, a Howard Dean regression underway, an essay of mine in the February 2004 Poetic Voices and Google turns up this site at the top of its report when you search on the phrase "cosmic liverwurst"- if you had bet that superfecta in November, I bet you'd have gotten some great odds. In honor of the Spirit Rover, my new poem this update is titled "Life on Mars". It originated as homage to a previous mission, but some minor edits make it (I hope) suitable for Spirit. There's a new blog on an old subject that you history buffs may criticize, but I hope you'll bear with me to the end. And I need a good book on Thomas Jefferson. Any suggestions?

December 11, 2003
Happy holidays! Updates to the site this month include My annual thoughts on the coming of Christmas (see New Poems), a Thanksgiving Prayer written by my daughter (under Writer's Blog), and another Published Poem. Speaking of which, I learned recently that my poem "Comet", from the Daughter Poems sequence, will appear next year in the Journal of NJ Poets"; Contact me if you're interested in obtaining a copy. Finally, a big Happy Birthday to Dave Zimmerman who not only has been a great friend for 15 years, but also continues to provide opportunities for me to present my peculiar combinations of artistry on his stage, and bakes me cookies in my own kitchen every Christmas besides. Here's Wishing Dave, and all of us, peace and prosperity in 2004.

For those who were wondering (and you know who you are, Mom), my October Barnes and Noble reading was very successful. It was attended by several poets, a quilter, physicist, and a pharmaceutical CEO, all of whom had pleasant things to say. If I can continue to satisfy THAT audience, I'll be very pleased with myself. On the hosting front, my Hoboken reading series is attempting something a little more ambitious than usual in December: a themed presentation and fundraising effort as part of a World AIDS Day observance, including viewing panels from the Quilt.

October 6, 2003
Tonight is my first featured reading in "the outside world" and I have to say I'm a little nervous. To all the people I invited, please bring valium - or at least beer - and be prepared to prop me up between poems; thanks in advance. Monday Poetry Report unfortunately seems to have folded - a shame; thanks to those who pointed out the dead link. Without MPR, I recommend keep yourself busy at two excellent daily sites: Poetry Daily and Verse Daily.

September 6, 2003
As is it tends to happen, the long nap of summer is ending with a burst of waking energy. First , the Spoken Word Series I host in Hoboken resumes at Symposia Bookstore. Second, and not to be missed, BJ Ward once again presents the Warren County Poetry Festival this year on September 20; I look forward to seeing you there. And finally, my snowed-out performance from earlier this year will happen Thursday, October 2 at the Clifton, NJ Barnes and Noble. I’ll be reading along with the Bruce Weber Ensemble, poetry and music that’s very different from my work; it should be a great night. More on that next week, I’ve posted a new blog to entertain you in the meantime.

July 22, 2003
The new season of the reading series I host has been posted, please check it out and visit us in our new venue! Also, you simply MUST visit the Code as Art Darwinian Poetry site immediately. Sort of an automated Mendelian MFA/PhD-CS exercise. If you have no idea what that means, well, neither do I. But go visit anyway.

June 7, 2003
The summer months are upon us -- notoriously slow months for poetry events. You have a new Writers' Blog and a promise to change to the poem in New Works soon, but since June holds Father's Day and my late father's birthday I chose to give "Tribute to My Father..." another few weeks in the spotlight. Updates coming this month on my personal reading schedule and that of the DeBaun Spoken Word Series.

May 21, 2003
Sorry for the delay in updating. I was distracted by an effort focused on another form of wordplay this month: I presented a poster at the annual symposium of the Project Management Institute's New Jersey chapter. You might wonder how a presentation subtitled "Tools and Techniques for Crisis and Rescue Programs" has anything to do with poetry. Check out Writer's Blog before you rule out the connection.

April 3, 2003
My snowed-out March 6 appearance at Barnes and Noble in West Paterson will probably be rescheduled for sometime in October -- watch the Appearances page for details as they develop. I received a great surprise this week: an essay of mine will appear on the Poetic Voices website in the April update; more on that in Writer's Blog, where my promise NOT to write about Iraq is still intact -- mostly because I've written nothing since the borders were crossed.

March 1, 2003
Welcome. You are now standing in the lobby of the writing world of David F. Vincenti. However you happened to arrive, please stay a while and examine our work in progress, and share your thoughts on what you find. If you enjoy the poetry here, please visit the Links and Appearances pages to find more places and pages that can deliver David's work to you. Should the site design strike you, please contact the folks at jmilligan.com, who generously created and maintain these pages.
